ResumoThe Amazon basin is one of the major engines of the global water cycle. It is also comprised of 30 distinct ecoregions with distinct vegetation types. Correspondingly, the impacts of forest disturbances and stresses on their hydrologic responses to a changing climate are expected to vary across the basin. In the face of an increasingly changing climate, identifying the effects of extreme droughts in different Amazonia ecoregions leading to unstable hydrologic behavior is important for understanding the role different forest types have in the water cycling dynamics of the entire basin. In this work, we use the hydrologic sensitivity index to quantify observed changes in the hydrologic responses of Amazonian forests that have experienced significant deforestation events to document the most hydrologically sensitive ecoregions within the basin and report the differences in response to three of the most recent extreme Amazon drought events (2005, 2010, and 2015). Our results show clusters of hydrologic sensitivity areas within similar ecoregions with specific vegetation and landscape characteristics that we use to attempt to identify the underlying factors leading to such responses. Ultimately, this work aims to situate the ecoregions of the Amazon basin that are closer to reaching a critical threshold of forest cover loss that may lead to irreversible changes in ecosystem services and water cycle dynamics.
